고급영문법 수동태편 2. 수동태가 쓰이는 상황

안녕하세요~ 오늘은 고급문법 수동태 시리즈의 세번째 시간으로,

언제 (능동태보다) 수동태가 더 자연스럽고 잘 쓰이는지 알아보겠습니다.

 

(1) 알다시피 '능동의 주체' (즉, 누가 하는지)를 생략할 수 있을 때 / 생략하고 싶을 때, 흔히 수동태를 씁니다.

능동의 주체가:

- 알려져있지 않음: My office was broken into when I was on holiday.

- 일반적인 사람들: An order form can be found on page 2.

- 중요하지 않음: He is thought to be somewhere in Russia.

- 명백함: She is being treated in hospital. (병원 직원이 당연히 능동 주체겠죠)

 

(2) 절차 등을 묘사하는 사실적인 글에선, 흔히 수동태를 씁니다.

Nuclear waste will still be radioactive even after 20,000 years, so it must be disposed of very carefully. It can be stored as a liquid in stainless-steel containers which are encased in concrete. The most dangerous nuclear waste can be turned into glass. It is planned to store this glass in deep underground mines.

 

(3) 비격식 상황에서, 주어가 people, somebody, someone, something, they, we, you 등 일반적이거나 또는 누군지 모르는 (또는 몰라도 전혀 상관없는) 경우 수동태를 씁니다. 수동태를 쓰면 조금 더 포멀한 뉘앙스가 생깁니다.

Somebody will give you the questions a week before the exam.

You will be given the questions a week before the exam.

The questions will be given to you a week before the exam.

 

They're installing the new computer system next month.

The new computer system is being installed next month.

 

(3) 영어에선 흔히 "현재 말하고 있는 주제"는 문장의 앞에 두고, 그 주제에 대한 설명은 문장에 뒤에 두는 것이 선호됩니다. 또는 그렇게 함으로써 해당 주제를 강조합니다. 수동태를 쓰므로써 이 구조를 만들 수 있습니다.

The three machines tested for the report contained different types of satety valve. The Boston Group manufactured all the equipment.

The three machines tested for the report contained different types of satety valve. All the equipment was manufactured by the Boston Group.

(The equipment를 강조하기 위해, 수동태를 써서 문장 앞에 둠)

 

(4) 주어가 굉장히 긴 경우, 수동태를 써서 문장 뒤로 보내므로써 좀 더 자연스러운 문장을 만들 수 있습니다.

I was surprised by John's decision to give up his job and move to Sydney. - 이게 더 자연스러움

John's decision to give up his job and move to Sydney surprised me.

 

(5) 수동태로 문장을 만들 때, that 구절이 주어가 된다면, 이땐 it 구절을 활용하는 것이 더 자연스럽습니다.

Everybody believed that the plan would fail.

이걸 기계적으로 수동태로 만들면:

That the plan would fail was believed by everyone. - 이상함

이 수동태를 it 구절을 활용해서 다시 쓰면:

It was believed that the plan would fail. - 훨씬 자연스러움.
