고급영문법 시제편 6. 과거완료진행, 과거완료, & 과거진행

오늘은 시제 시리즈의 여섯번째 시간으로 과거완료진행, 과거완료 및 과거진행에 대해서 집중적으로 다뤄보겠습니다.

저번 시간 현재완료진행 & 현재완료와 기본적인 법칙 (진행/상태, 특정 횟수 등)은 비슷한 점이 많습니다. 현재완료진행 vs 현재완료가 사용되는 상황을 잘 구분하셨다면, 과거완료진행 vs 과거완료도 쉽게 이해하실 수 있습니다.

그럼 가볼게요~

 

(1) 일단 과거완료진행과 과거완료는 두루뭉술하게는 비슷하게 쓸 수 있습니다.

I'd been working hard all year, so I felt that I deserved a holiday.

I'd worked hard all year, so I felt that I deserved a holiday.

 

다만, 과거 시점을 기준으로 계속 하고 있었다면 과거완료진행, 과거 시점에 이미 행동을 완료한 상태였다면 과거완료를 씁니다.

I had been finishing some work in the garden when Sue arrived. - 수가 왔을 때 계속 가든 일을 마무리하고 있는 중이었음

I had finished all the ironing so I started cleaning the windows. - 다름질을 다 끝냈고, 그리고 창문 청소를 시작함.

 

(2) 횟수가 정확하거나 (또는 횟수를 물어볼 때)는 과거완료만 사용합니다.

How many times had you met him before yesterday?

I had stayed in the hotel twice in the 2000s.

I had been staying in the hotel twice ... (x)

 

(3) (1)에서 봤던 걸 좀 더 세분화하면, 과거완료진행은 - 과거 시점 이전에 진행되었으며, a) 그 과거 시점에 딱 끝났거나, b) 과거 시점 이후로도 진행되었거나, c) 과거 시점 바로 이전에 끝났을 때 모두 사용합니다.

각 a), b), c)에 맞는 예문을 보겠습니다.

a) We'd been driving for about an hour when the engine suddenly stopped.

b) She felt terrible during the interview because she had been suffering from flu since the previous day.

c) When I last saw John, he'd been running and was out of breath.

 

(3.2) 행동/이벤트가 얼마나 지속되었는지가 명시되면 과거완료진행을 쓰지만, 지속 기간에 대해서 알고 싶지 않을 땐 그냥 과거진행을 씁니다.

아래 예문을 통해 비교해보겠습니다.

When the merger was announced it became apparent that the two companies had been discussing the possibility since last year.

A friend told me about a conversation she'd recently overheard. Two women were discussing their holiday plans.

I first met Steve and Jane when they had been going out together for five years, and they didn't get married for another three years after that.

Emma met Graham when she was going out with his best friend.

 

(4) 우리가 이미 배운대로, 상태동사는 진행형으로 쓰지 않습니다.

(상태동사는 시제편 1번에서 자세하게 다뤘었습니다.)

We had owned the car for 6 months before we discovered it was stolen.

 

(5) 마지막으로 과거완료진행형은 written texts에서 보통 쓰이지, 회화/구어체에선 잘 사용하지 않습니다.
