[비지니스 영어] Have A Quorum

회의를 시작할 때, 특히 화상회의의 경우, 미팅에 초대된 참가자들 리스트를 보면서 "오늘 미팅의 참가자가 다 모였나요? 라고 말할 때가 많다.

이것을 영어로 다양하게 말할 수 있는데,

보통은 - "do we have everyone here? It looks like Helen and Joe haven't joined yet, so let's give them a couple more minutes." 라는 식으로 이야기할 수 있다.

또는 - 오늘의 주제인 - Have a Quorum을 사용해서

"I think we have a quorum. Let me share my screen and let's begin."

라고 할 수도 있다.

 

Quorum의 definition을 보면 (from Google)

the minimum number of members of an assembly or society that must be present at any of its meetings to make the proceedings of that meeting valid

미팅을 유효하게 하는 최소한의 참가인원. 한국말로는 정족수이다.

 

회사에서 수도없이 (그리고 쓰잘데기없이) 많은 미팅에 쓰기엔 거창한 말 같지만,

원래 미국사람들은 화려한 표현을 쓰는 걸 좋아하는 듯.

 

더 다양한 예문을 봅시다. 보통은 국회나 협회에서 의사결정을 내릴 수 있는 정족수 같은 느낌으로 많이 쓰인다.

A quorum for this purpose shall be 35 members present.

Failure to achieve a quorum can seriously disrupt the decision-making process of a charity.
