고급영문법 조동사편 1. Can, Could, Be Able To, Be Allowed To

오늘은 조동사 시리즈의 첫번 째 시간으로 can 과 could에 대해서 집중적으로 알아보겠습니다.

시제편만 올리니 지겹고 좀 반복적이라, for the sake of variety, 조동사 시리즈도 in parallel 로 해보기로 했어요 :)

가끔 "could는 can의 과거가 아니다!"라고 적혀있는 영어 컨텐츠를 많이 보고 개인적으로도 헷갈릴 때가 많은데, (모든 상황은 아니지만 could는 can의 과거가  맞습니다 - 특히 "할 수 있다"의 의미일 때) 아무튼 한번에 정리하고 공부할 수 있어서 저도 덕을 많이 본 포스팅입니다!

 

Can 과 Could

 

(1) Ability - can, could, be able to

(1.1) ability를 이야기하기 위해서 보통 can이나 could 도 쓰고,  추가로 be able to를 쓰기도 합니다.

하지만, 아래와 같은 상황에서는 보통 be able to를 쓰지 않습니다:

 

A. 지금 당장 하고 있는 일을 설명할 때

Look! Mom! I can stand on my hands. - 지금 물구나무를 서고 있으면서, 엄마 봐바!! 할 수 있어요!!! 할 때는 be able to를 쓰지 않습니다.

B. 수동태 앞

CDs can now be copied easily. - 수동태 앞이기 때문에 "CDs are able to be copied" 라고 하지 않습니다.

C. "할 줄 알다"의 의미를 가질 때

I can cook Malaysian food. - 할 줄 알다의 의미이기 때문에 I am able to cook 이라고 쓰지 않습니다.

 

(1.2) 과거에 할 수 있는 general ability를 말할 땐 could과 be able to 둘 다 쓸 수 있지만,

과거에 한 '특정 성취'를 말할 땐 could를 쓰지 않고, be able to 를 씁니다.

She could play the flute quite well / she was able to play the flute quite well. - 과거의 general ability 이기 때문에 둘 다 가능합니다.

She swam strongly and was able to cross the river, even though it was sowllen by the heavy rain. - 수영해서 강을 건널 수 있었던 하나의, 특정한 성취가 가능했던 상황이기 때문에, could이 아니라 be able to 를 사용했습니다.

 

(1.3) 하지만 다음과 같은 과거상황에서는 보통 could를 쓰는 것이 더 자연스럽습니다.

A. 부정형 문장

I tried to get up but I couldn't move. (o)

I tried to get up but I was not able to move. (x - 틀린 건 아니지만 위의 could 문장이 더 자연스럽습니다)

 

B. sense verbs (feel, hear, see, smell, taste 등)과 thinking verbs (believe, decide, remember, understand 등)

I could remember the crash, but nothing after that. (o)

I was able to remember the crash, but nothing after that. (x)

 

C. the only thing / place / time 및 all 이 the only thing을 의미할 때

All we could see were his feet.

 

D. 거의 일어날 뻔 했으나 그렇지 않았던 상황 - 특히 almost, hardly, just, nearly와 함께

I could nearly touch the ceiling. (o)

I was able to nearly touch the ceiling. (x)

 

(2) Possibility

(2.1) 어떤 일이 '이론적으로 가능하다'를 뜻할 땐 could만 쓰고, '실제 가능하고 실제 일어난' 경우엔 can 만 씁니다.

It could be expensive to have a cat. - 이론적으로, 고양이를 키우면 돈이 많이 들 수도 있다 (키운 건 아님)

It can be expensive to have a cat. - 내가 고양이를 키워서 아는데, 가끔 돈이 엄청 들 수 있어.

 

(2.2) 어떤 일이 '불가능'할 땐, 이론적이든, 실제로 그렇든 상관없이 can't 만 씁니다 (couldn't (x))

There can't be many people in the world who haven't watched television.

He can't meet with you today; he is tied up in the meeting.

 

(2.3) 미래에 가능한 일을 얘기할 땐 can 과 could 을 둘 다 쓰지만,

can을 쓰면 very real possibility 가 있는 것이고,

could를 쓰면 긴가민가, 할 순 있지만 아닐 수도 있고의 느낌입니다.

We can stay with Jim in New York. - 우리는 뉴욕에서 짐네 집에서 지낼거야.

We could stay with Jim in New York. - 아직 정확하지 않고, 짐이 그 때 집에 있을지, 걔가 허락할 진 모르지만 아무튼 가능은 해.

 

(3) Permission - could & be allowed to 

(3.1) 과거의 general permission 상황에선 could 과 was/were allowed to 둘 다 쓸 수 있지만,

과거의 특정한 일에 대한 permission이 었다면 could를 쓰지 않고 was/were allowed to 만 쓸 수 있습니다.

Anyone was allowed to fish in the lake when the council owned it. (o) - general 한 permission

Anyone could fish in the lake when the councile owned it. (o) - general 한 permission

Although he didn't have a ticket, Ben was allowed to come in. (o) - 특정 상황에서의 허락

Although he didn't have a ticket, Ben could come in. (x) - 특정 상황에서의 허락

 

(3.2) 과거 permission 상황의 부정형에선, general or particular permission 상관없이 could / be allowed to 둘 다 사용할 수 있습니다.

We couldn't open the presents until Christmas morning.

We weren't allowed to open the presents until Christmas morning.
