다른 사람의 말과 생각을 인용 / 보고하기

보고 (reporting)에 대해서 알아보는 시간 중 첫번째입니다.

 

1) 용어정리

- Reporting clause: 인용 / 보고함을 알리는 말 (she said, he did)

- Reported clause: 보고되는 말 / 행동 (문장의 핵심), 말한 그대로가 아니라, 뭐라고 말했는지 의미 전달

2) 말한 그대로 인용하기 - quotation

"I suppose you've heared the latest news," she said.

"Of course," Carter replied, "you will have to pay him to do the job".

Reporting cluase (she said, Carter replied)는 직접인용구 앞, 중간, 뒤에 다 올 수 있습니다.

 

2.1) 소설이나 이야기등에선, Reporting clause에 있는 동사 (say, think, reply 등)과 주어의 위치를 바꿔서 쓰기도 합니다.

"When will you be back?" asked Arnold. (or ... Arnold asked.)

하지만 주어가 대명사 (she, he, it 등)인 경우, 주어와 동사의 위치를 바꾸지 않습니다.

"And after that I moved to Italy," she continued. (...continued she X)

 

3) 부정문으로 보고하기

3.1) 누군가가 "~하지 않았다"를 말하고자 한다면, reporting clause의 동사에 부정형을 적용합니다.

He didn't tell me how he would get to London.

 

3.2) 부정문 자체를 보고/말하고자 한다면, reported clause을 부정문으로 만들어서 씁니다.

"You're right it isn't a good idea" --> He agreed that it wasn't a good idea.

하지만, 의미에 따라서 reporting clause를 부정문으로 만들어서도 쓸 수 있습니다.

"I disagree. It is not a good idea" --> He didn't agree that it was a good idea.

 

3.3) 다음의 동사가 쓰인다면, 항상 reporting clause를 부정형으로 만들어서 씁니다

believe, feel, intend, plan, propose, suppose, think, want, expect

"I expect he won't come" / "I don't expect he will come"

--> She didn't expect him to come (o)

--> She expected he wouldn't come (x) 완전히 틀렸다고는 볼 수 없으나, 위의 문장이 더 자연스러움

 

4) 의문문이 들어간 경우

4.1) wh-의문문은, reporting clause + wh-의문구절의 형태로 씁니다.

She asked me what the problem was.

I asked him where to go next

 

4.2) yes/no로 대답하는 의문문은, reporting cluase + if / whether 구절의 형태로 씁니다.

Liz wanted to know if / whether we had any photos of our holiday.

 

4.3) Reported clause가 의문사 + be동사 + 보어인 경우

"Who was the winner"

--> I asked who the winner was.

--> I asked who was the winner.

둘 다 사용할 수 있습니다.

 

4.4) 의문사 구절을 보고할 때는, 강조의 의미 do는 사용할 수 없습니다.

She asked if I did find it (x).

당연히, 부정문으로 만들기 위한 didn't / don't 는 사용할 수 있습니다.

He asked me why I didn't want anything to eat.
