[고급어휘] 22. Aplomb

단어를 공부하다보면, "이런 긴/어려운 단어도 실제 영어구사자들은 쓸까?" 싶을 때가 많죠?

그래서 연재하는 - 제가 미국에서 살면서 실제 듣고/읽고/쓰는 단어들은 소개하는 고급어휘 시리즈입니다 :)

 

오늘 알아볼 단어는 Aplomb 입니다.

처음 봤을 땐, 뭐 이따구로 생긴 단어가 싶었어요. 그런데 책을 읽다보면 굉장히 많이 보게되더라구요. 보일 때마다 뜻을 찾아보는데 외워지지 않아서 고급어휘 포스팅을 통해 머리에 박제해보려고 합니다 :)

 

Aplomb의 뜻은:

Self-confidence or assurance, especially when in a demanding situation

특히 힘든 상황에서의 자신감, 침착함, 평정함, 정도로 해석할 수 있겠네요.

 

보통은 [Somebody did something something with (소유격) aplomb]의 형태로 쓰이는 것 같습니다.

관사는 붙지 않지만 소유격은 잘 붙는 것 같아요.

 

발음은 쓰인대로 어플럼~ b는 묵음

 

쉬운 예문을 보면,

She passed all the exams with aplomb.

He delivered the speech with his usuall aplomb.

She handled the questions with great aplomb.

 

조금 더 긴 예문을 보면,

Major companies with relatively modern systems will most likely handle the shift with aplomb.

Jama seems to be handling this complexity with aplomb, it claims usage across 25 percent of the Fortune 100 companies.

In the week I used Amy, it handled every meeting request with aplomb, save for one, where someone asked if I would like to meet in person.

It’s not just text either, as it handles photos, PDFs, and document files with aplomb as well.

So it's no surprise he handles talking about his five-year career with aplomb.
