[고급어휘] 21. Esoteric

안녕하세요~

단어를 공부하다보면, "이런 긴/어려운 단어도 실제 영어구사자들은 쓸까?" 싶을 때가 많죠?

그래서 연재하는 - 제가 미국에서 살면서 실제 듣고/읽고/쓰는 단어들은 소개하는 고급어휘 시리즈입니다 :)

 

오늘의 고급어휘는 Esoteric 입니다.

평상시에 쓸 일은 크게 없지만, 가끔 팟캐스트나 책에서 보이는 단어입니다.

볼 때마다 찾아보는데, 항상 까먹고, 또 찾아보고, 까먹고를 무한반복 중이라, 이번엔 까먹지 않게 여기에 정리해서 올려둡니다.

 

Esoteric (에쏘테릭)의 뜻은

Intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.

엄청 세분화되고 특별한 지식이나 흥미를 가진 소수의 사람들을 위하거나, 그들에 의해서만 이해되는 것

 

헷갈리게도, Esoteric의 반대말은 알파벳 하나만 바꾼, 발음도 정확하게 안하면 비슷한 Exoteric (엑소테릭)

예문을 보겠습니다.

I had long argued that Communist literature was, for the most part, dull, esoteric, and Western-centered, but ought to be simple, clear, and relevant to the African masses.
