[고급어휘] 18. Sanguine

안녕하세요~

단어를 공부하다보면, "이런 긴/어려운 단어도 실제 영어구사자들은 쓸까?" 싶을 때가 많죠?

그래서 연재하는 - 제가 미국에서 살면서 실제 듣고/읽고/쓰는 단어들은 소개하는 고급어휘 시리즈입니다 :)

 

오늘 알아볼 단어는 sanguine 입니다.

발음은 어려울 것 없이 '쌩귄' ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 입니다. 왜 한국말로 적으면 웃긴걸까요.

Sanguine의 라틴어 어원의 의미는 blood, 피 입니다.

그래서 뜻 중에 하나로 "피 처럼 빨간(색)"도 있습니다.

"혈색이 잘 돌아서" 빨간걸 말할 때도 사용하고, "outdoor 일/생활 때문에 빨개진 얼굴"을 말할때도 사용합니다.

소설 1984에서 나온 예문 하나만 보고 가겠습니다 :)

His hair was very fair, his face naturally sanguine, his skin roughened by coarse soap and blunt razor blades and the cold of the winder that had just ended.

하지만, 일상 생활에서 자주 쓰이는 구글 사전 상 1번 뜻은:

optimistic or positive, especially in an apparently bad and difficult situation 입니다.

한국 말로는, 어려운 상황 속에서도 긍정적이고 낙관적인

 

제가 다니는 회사가 요즘 어려워요. 90년대 닷컴버블 꺼진 사태 이후로 이렇게 어려웠던 적이 없다고 합니다. 그래서 일시적으로 임금도 삭감되고, 보너스도 다 없애고 그래서 ㅠㅠ 저도 들어오는 월급이 너무 적어져서 억지로 알뜰살뜰하게 살고 있습니다.

아무튼 그런 상황 속에서, 요즘 임원들이 뭔가 직원들의 동기부여 / morale boosting을 하기 위해서 온갖 비디오를 찍어서 사내 게시판에 올리는 데, 거기서 자주 들리는 단어가 바로 오늘 알아보는 단어 "sanguine"입니다.

 

여러가지 예문을 보겠습니다 - 비지니스 상황에서 쓰인 걸로 골라보았습니다.

여기까지, 이상하게(?) 생겨서 잘 안쓸 것 같지만, 나름 잘 쓰이는 고급어휘 sanguine에 대해서 알아보았습니다.
