    제목과는 다르게 지난 3일동안 찾아본 단어들이다. 오늘 하루종일 회사 inventory-related policy를 읽고 이해해보려고 하느라 머리가 터질 것 같아서, 잠깐 20분 쉬면서 지난 며칠동안 찾아본 단어를 기록해야징.

    propriety

    the state or quality of conforming to conventionally accepted standards of behavior or morals.

    "he always behaved with the utmost propriety"

    decorum, respectability, decency, correctness appropriateness

     

    cinch

    씬쉬

    an extremely easy task (informal)

    a sure thing; a certainty

     

    ride the coattails

    benefit from the success of (another), sometimes undeservedly.

    "she's riding the coattails of the other three and doesn't deserve to be mentioned alongside them"

    흔히 정치에서 많이 쓰이는 말. 예를 들어 한 정치인의 인기/신뢰를 다른 정치인이 써먹는 것

     

    cataclysmic

    disastrous catastrophic, calamitous와 같은 뜻

     

    antics

    foolish, outrageous, or amusing behavior.

    "the antics of our political parties"

     

    cad

    a man who behaves dishonorably, especially toward a woman.

    "her adulterous cad of a husband"

    오래된 말이라고 함

     

    non sequitur

    넌 세퀴터, 쎄에 엑센트가 있음

    a conclusion or statement that does not logically follow from the previous argument or statement.

    "his weird mixed metaphors and non sequiturs"

     

    impertinent

    now showing respect, rude

    rude, insolent, impolite

    왜 impertinent랑 insolent는 맨날 찾아봐도 뜻이 안외워지지...

     

    effrontery

    insolent or impertinent behaviour.

    "one juror had the effrontery to challenge the coroner's decision"

     

    ho hum

    used to express boredom or resignation. boring

    하품하는 소리에서 유래했다고 함.

     

    pontificate

    express one's opinions in a way considered annoyingly pompous and dogmatic.

    "he was pontificating about art and history"

    expound, declaim 등이 동의어라고 한다. 다 처음 들어봤넹.

     

    aplomb

    self-confidence or assurance, especially when in a demanding situation.

    "Diana passed the test with aplomb"

    poise, self-assurance, self-possession

    아주 좋은 단어다.

     

    glib

    (of words or the person speaking them) fluent and voluble but insincere and shallow.

    "she was careful not to let the answer sound too glib"

    말만 많고 실속없는인거군.

     

    maudlin

    self-pityingly or tearfully sentimental, often through drunkenness.

    "the drink made her maudlin"

    tear-jerking, oversentimental overemotional

    내가 감명깊게 본 닉슨의 checkers speach를 많은 사람들은 maudlin하다고 생각했다고 나옴

     

    splice

    두 줄을 꼬아서 만드는 매듭. 이것도 몇번이나 찾아본 것 같은뎅 힝.

    치과에서 이빨 뽑을 때 쓰는 것 같은 도구
