9/29/2021 오늘 찾아본 단어

최근에 엄청 게을러져서 책을 많이 읽지 않았고, 그냥 운동하면서 오디오북 들은 것이 다였다. 그래서 딱히 찾아본 단어도 많이 없었다. 어제 닉슨책을 읽으면서 찾아본 몇 개 단어가 있어서 시리즈에 추가 :)

힝! 책 더 열심히 읽고 단어도 더 열심히 찾아봐야징. 지속적인 다짐과 push 없이 꾸준히 공부하기가 보통 어려운게 아니군요.

 

graft

1번 뜻으로 접목, 접붙이기, 접목한 나뭇가지, 피부뼈 이식이 있지만, 책에서는 아래의 뜻으로 사용되었다.

practices, especially bribery, used to secure illicit gains in politics or business; corruption.

"sweeping measures to curb official graft"

흠 분명 최근에 찾아봤던 것 같은데....기억력이 너무 안좋구먼.

 

rout

a disorderly retreat of defeated troops.

"the retreat degenerated into a rout"

a decisive defeat.

"the party lost more than half their seats in the rout"

put to rout — put to flight; defeat utterly.

"I once put a gang to rout"

 

whimper

(of a person or animal) make a series of low, feeble sounds expressive of fear, pain, or discontent.

"a child in a bed nearby began to whimper"

소리를 내는 것뿐 아니라 그렇게 불평하고 보채고 징징거리는 것도 포함한다.

 

grovel

lie or crawl abjectly on the ground with one's face downward.

"she was groveling on the floor in fear"

act in an obsequious way in order to obtain someone's forgiveness or favor.

"everyone expected me to grovel with gratitude"

"기어다니다"가 figuratively 비굴하게 굽실거리다의 뜻을 가진건 만국 공통인가보다.

 

 

gaffe

an unintentional act or remark causing embarrassment to its originator; a blunder.

"an unforgivable social gaffe"

흠. blunder라고 기억해놨던 기억이 있는데....ㅋㅋㅋ

 

castigate

reprimand (someone) severely.

"he was castigated for not setting a good example"

 

scurrilous

making or spreading scandalous claims about someone with the intention of damaging their reputation.

"a scurrilous attack on his integrity"

abusive, derogatory, disparaging, pejorative

 

fray

보통 천의 끝이 닳고 너덜너덜해진걸 fray라고 하는데 오늘 두번째 뜻을 배웠다.

a situation of intense activity, typically one incorporating an element of aggression or competition.

"nineteen companies intend to bid for the contract, with three more expected to enter the fray"

a battle or fight.

 

 

goad

provoke or annoy (someone) so as to stimulate some action or reaction.

"he goaded her on to more daring revelations"

아맞네. cattle을 drive하기 위해서 동물 찌르는 도구를 goad라고 하지!
