요즘 우리팀에 현금흐름 관련 컨설팅 서비스를 제공해주고 있는 컨설팅 회사 사람들이랑 같이 일을 하는 중인데,

그 분들이 이 sausage making이라는 표현을 자주 사용한다 ㅋㅋㅋ

Alright! let's get into the sausage making.

 

여기서 sausage making 이란

소세지를 만드는 과정은 일반사람에겐 역겨운게 많다 - 돼지도 잡고, 돼지 창자에 막 꾸역꾸역 고기도 넣고.

그렇게 The unpleasant way in which a process or activity is carried on behind the scenes 를 이야기 할 때 소세지 만드는 것에 비유한다.

컨설턴트가 let's get into the sausage making이라고 했을 땐, 디테일이 엄청 많고, 더러운 일을 시작해봅시다! 라는 의미로 사용되었다. (현금흐름 관련 metrics 100개가 넘는 걸, 하나하나 보면서 데이터가 어디서 오는지, 누가 리뷰하는지 정리하는 작업이었음 :) )

 

일반적으로 더 잘 알려진 표현은 사실; How the sausage gets/is made

프러시아의 수상이었던 비스마르크의 quote에서 시작된 표현이라고 함. This is what he said:

Laws are like sausages: it is better not to see them being made

법은 소세지와 비슷하다 - 어떻게 만들어지는지 보지 않는 편이 낫다.

 

다른 예문:

I know you don't like to accept the closed-door deals that go on in politics, but this is how the sausage gets made!

정치계에서 흔히 일어나는 비공개 거래를 니가 하기 싫어하는건 잘 알겠는데, 어쩔 수 없어, this is how the sausage gets made!

 

Nearly everyone in the country has a smartphone, totally oblivious to the dire effects their production has on the planet and on the lives of workers who assemble them. But, as ever, people don't want to know how the sausage gets made.

거의 모든 사람들이 스마트폰을 가지고 있지만, 스마트폰 생산이 지구에, 그리고 스마트폰 만드는 공장 사람들에게 (foxcon이 생각나네요) 얼마나 나쁜 영향을 미치는지에 대해서는 전혀 의식하지 못한다. 하지만, 언제나 그렇듯, 사람들은 소세지가 어떻게 만들어지는지는 알고 싶어하지 않는다. the behind scenes에서 얼마나 더러운 일이 일어나는지는 알고 싶어하지 않는다.

 

the Meat of the matter

본론. 가장 중요한 것.

The most important, basic, or fundamental essence or element(s) of an issue, problem, or matter at hand.

the heart of the matter 또는  the crux of the matter라고도 쓸 수 있음.

남편은 보통 the heart of the matter라고 쓰지, 누가 the meat of the matter라고 하냐고 반문했는데,

우리 회사 사람들은 엄청 많이 쓴다.

This is the meat of the meeting.

We have only 30 minutes scheduled for this meeting so let's get to the meat of the discussion right away!

 

Nuggets

우리는 보통 너겟은 치킨 너겟으로 잘 알고 있지만,

1번 뜻은 금이 천연의 상태에서 발견될 때, 너겟모양처럼 a lump 상태로 있는데, 그 천연 상태의 금을 a nugget of gold라고 한다.

그리고 아주 중요한 정보/지식을 뜻하기도 한다. 가장 잘 알려진 표현으로는 a nugget of wisdom이 있다.

회사에서도 아주 중요한 정보나 지식을 가르켜 nuggets of information이라고 쓰는 경우가 있습니다.

 

This book is a fascinating read, and it's filled with nuggets of information about the war.

이 책은 아주 좋은 읽을거리이다. 전쟁에 대한 정보로 꽉 차있다.

 

The conversation with the revenue lead was so helpful - I got so many nuggests of information by just talking to him for 30 minutes.
