Tail이 들어간 영어단어 - Dovetail, Tailwind, Tailgate

지난 해, 친구 부부에게 세상에서 제일 많이 쓰는 단어 tailgate를 설명해줘서 아주 뿌듯했었다. 그래서 유툽에도 올리고 싶었으나, 너무 짧아서 고민하던 찰나!

어젯 밤 이빨을 닦으면서 dovetail도 유투브에서 다루면 아주 좋을 단어일 것 같다는 생각이 들었고, 오! 그러면 tail로 묶어서 에피소드를 만들면 되겠다!는 생각이 들었다.

두 개만 하면 심심하니깐 tailwind까지 추가 후후!

1. Dovetail

제일 literal한 뜻은, woodworking에서 두 개의 나무를 joint할 때 쓰는 수법의 이름이다.

이렇게 접합시킨 것이 Dovetail

명사로는 technique의 이름, 또는 그렇게 된 joint를 뜻하고,

동사로 dovetail을 만들다, dovetail로 접합시키다 라는 뜻을 가진다.

 

figuratively 쓴 경우의 definition은

fit or cause to fit together easily and conveniently, fit easily and work well together

잘 들어맞다, 잘 맞아 떨어지다 정도로 해석할 수 있겠습니다.

 

사용되는 형태는:

A dovetails (nicely, well, etc.) with B

A+B dovetail (well, with each other, together, etc.)

2. Tailwind & Headwind

tailwind는 뒤에서 부는 바람, 뒷바람, figuratively는 무언가를 하는데 있어서 나를 도와주는 것들

headwind는 앞에서 부는 바람, 맞바람, 역풍, figuratively 나를 방해하는, 힘들게 하는 것들

The combination of pent-up demand, states relaxing coronavirus-related restriction and elevated incentives are all providing a tailwind for the industry.

The resulting devaluation of the Swiss franc appeared to provide a tailwind for an export-oriented economy.

 

[Headwind 예시]

India’s economy was facing headwinds well before the pandemic.

Even if the virus spread flattens, the recovery is likely to face headwinds from diminished activity and costly adjustments in some sectors, along with impaired incomes among many consumers and businesses.

 

 

3. Tailgate

미국인들은 트럭을 엄청 타고 다니죠. 사진처럼 화물칸 문여는 부분을 영어로 tailgate라고 합니다. 꼬리 (즉 뒷부분)에 있는 문이죠.

그리고 또 미국인들이 좋아하는 풋볼게임 전,후에 술마시고 노는 파티를 사진처럼 트럭의 tailgate에다가 음식이랑 술을 넣고 한 것에서 유래되어서, 풋볼게임 전, 후에 하는 파티도 tailgate party라고 부릅니다.

 

하지만 일상생활에서 진짜 자주쓰이는 뜻은 바로바로:

drive too closely behind (another vehicle) 입니다.

운전할 때 안전거리 안두고 내 차 뒤에 엄청 가깝게 붙어서 운전하는 사람들이 꼭 있죠? 그렇게 앞차에 따라붙어서 운전하는 것을 tailgate라고 합니다.

This car behind has been tailgating the whole way!

That car is tailgating the sh** out of me.
