영어처럼 안 생긴 단어 세 가지 | Mojo, Kudos, Gung-Ho

오늘은 영어처럼 생기지 않았는데, 회사에서 꽤 자주 쓰이는 단어 세 가지에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.

 

1. Mojo

n. a Magic charm, or power, full of energy

한국말로는 - (딱히 뭐라고 특정하기 어렵지만) 단체/그룹/회사에서 생기는 마력, 힘, 동기, 에너지 등 

보통 다시 얻었다 (get back, have back)와 잃었다 (lose) 의미의 동사와 함께 사용됩니다.

우리회사 CEO가 직원들 동기부여하느라 엄청 쓰는 단어입니다 :D

 

[예문]

I can feel that the team is getting back its mojo.

She needs to get her mojo working to win the election.

Dollar Loses Its Mojo

 

정확한 유래는 없으나, 미국의 South Carolina와 Goergia 지역의 아프라칸 어메리칸인 Gullah 그룹이 썼던 단어 중  "moco"라는 "마법"이라는 뜻을 가진 단어에서 유래된 것으로 짐작된다고 합니다.

 

2. Kudos

n. compliments or congratulations

축하합니다, 고맙습니다, 수고했어요 등을 합친 느낌

보통 [Kudos to 사람 for V-ing] 의 형태로 많이 사용됩니다.

 

[예문]

kudos to everyone who put the event together

Big kudos to each one of you for completing the pilot! we did it!

 

Greek "kydos" (magical glory)에서 유래된 말이라고 합니다.

 

3. Gung-Ho

adj. unthinkingly enthusiastic and eager, especially about taking part in fighting or warfare

(특히 전쟁, 싸움 등의 상황에서) 이기고자, 하고자 하는 강한 정신

유래는 2차 세계전쟁 동안 미군 (해병)이 쓴 중국어 gōnghé (공허) 에서 시작되었다고 합니다. 중국어 gonghe는 ‘work together’ 'work in harmony' 함께 잘 일하다 라는 뜻이라고 합니다.

 

[예문]

in order to get the job done you must be all "gung ho"- ready to plow through objections, move your agenda forward, and close the deal quickly. 

Apple is so gung ho about the convenience of wireless audio that it conveniently overlooks the drastic difference in lifespan between wired analog headphones and wireless digital ones.
