[영어회화] Peanut Gallery

 

구독하는 요리 잡지 레시피에 달린 댓글에서 Peanut Gallery라는 표현을 보았다.

"이 레시피는 아주 쉽고 맛있었어요. 우리집 Peanut Gallery도 대 만족이었습니다"

라는 식의 댓글이었다.

처음 들어보는 표현이라, 바로 구글로 찾아봐서 알게 되었다.

 

첫번째 (Origin) 뜻: rearmost or uppermost area in the balcony containing the least expensive seats

콘서트장에서 가장 싸게 판매되는 제일 윗층, 제일 뒤에 있는 자리를 Peanut Gallery 라고 부른다고 한다.

예전 주된 엔터테인먼트가 Vaudeville (춤, 코미디, 마술, 서커스 등 쇼) 이던 19세기 후반 / 20세기 초,

보통 제일 싼 좌석에 제공되는 간식거리는 땅콩이었다고 한다. 그리고 제일 싼 좌석에 앉은 사람들이 제일 시끄럽고, 재미없다 구리다 하면서 야유를 제일 크게 보내고, 땅콩을 던지고 그랬다고 한다.

그래서 "no comments from the peanut gallery" or "quiet in the peanut gallery" (즉, 땅콩 좌석에 앉은 사람들 조용히 하세요!) 라는 말이 자주 사용되었다고 한다.

 

두번째 뜻 (파생된):  people whose criticisms are regarded as irrelevant or insignificant

땅콩좌석에 앉은 사람들이 툭 하면 야유를 보내는 것 처럼, 별로 중요하지도 않고 크게 관련없는 것을 트집잡고 비판하는 사람들을 Peanut Gallery라고 부른다.

위에서 말한 레시피에 댓글 단 사람은 - 아마 뭐만 만들면 가족들이 이건 맛없다, 이건 별로다 트집을 많이 잡았나보다 :D

 

예문 간단한 것만 몇 개 던져봅니다.

One of the perks about having a successful idea is proving the people in the peanut gallery wrong.

The overwhelming response from the peanut gallery was that people who don’t like Apple’s policies shouldn’t buy Apple’s phones.
